The Inner Being grew out of gesture rather than plan: a figure built with a palette knife, layer upon layer, until a face and a sinuous body emerged from the raw color itself. The figure is anchored in a red half-circle, as if any inward elevation must first pass through matter and the weight of the body. The face, tilted and stripped of unnecessary detail, turns away from outer noise to look inward — hence the title. Beneath the eyes and around the mouth, traces of ivory break through the red: not highlights, but marks left by something harder to name — tears worn into the face by a life that has already been lived. What looks, from a distance, like a formal contrast of color is, up close, the residue of distress. Above the face, a white form rises, a counterpoint to the anchoring below, like a breath trying to free itself from that weight. The composition rests on a deliberate chromatic tension: a dense, textured yellow on one side, a quieter blue-grey closing in on the other. Worked entirely with the knife, the surface keeps the trace of the gesture — deep striations, raw bursts of white — rather than seeking a smooth image. This painting extends a line of thought I first explored in writing, in my essay L'Origine Intérieure and the philosophy of Sphérisme it develops: the idea that meaning does not come from outside, but takes root within, circulating, intensifying, settling — a truth that has to be lived before it can be understood. The Inner Being is that idea translated into paint: a face that has already suffered its way toward that truth, turning inward not to perform but to find what remains standing.
